Never Let Me Go By Kazuo Ishiguro

A master storyteller and a brilliant writer, Kazuo Ishiguro writes his sixth novel "Never Let Me Go" to prove the worth of soul and emotions of any living being. Kazuo Ishiguro is surely the right choice to read for his marvelous and independent thoughts will drive readers into his world. Ishiguro with his extraordinary writing style comes up with a science fiction combined with human emotions. This tale is the narration of a group of genetically engineered children who live in a country house called Hailsham.

Hailsham is the house and school to all the kids. They are taught and encouraged towards leading an altruistic life. These kids are produced with a single aim to cater human deformities and needs. This story is about how artificially produced humans develop feelings for their mates and their life goes upside down until they realize the ultimate motto of their life.

The leading character, Kathy spends her time reminiscing past instead of living in present. Her memory still drags her to teenage life where Tommy and Ruth used to be her friends at Hailsham. She remembers how all the students at Hailsham were informed and not informed about what they were and what their ultimate aim was. They were created from human clones who exist only to donate organs once they’re mature. All the Hailsham students were encouraged to focus on their health and create art.

The life of clones was uncertain as first, their duty was to be a carer and then to be a donator. Science fiction never allows a writer to touch the surface of emotions but Ishiguro towards the end of the novel brings an enlightening purpose of clones to prove whether they have souls or not through art and their right to humane treatment.

Ruth is an eccentric character who out of fear of being left alone seduces Tommy and repents it later. Is Ruth a negative character? Nah..! it is the fear of being left out that takes refuge inside her brain and makes her negative for Tommy and Kathy who were extremely in love with others.

The days at Hailsham were over and three friends started living at the cottage until they receive any message for carer training. The rumors of deferral for those in love and some amount of granted time before the training of carer was spread. Tommy and Kathy were hopeful to have a few years together before they start their works as carers and later as donors. The love shown in the novel between Kathy and Tommy is passionate and heartfelt. The days of the union of three friends come to an end and the story goes on with its pace.

The story oscillates between past and present. Kathy becomes a carer and unexpectedly meets her friends Tommy and Ruth which brings memories of childhood at Hailsham and old Freud between Ruth and Kathy. Their reunion brings them a new motive of life,  forgetting all the bitterness of childhood. Tommy and Kathy forgive Ruth and Towards the end of the novel, they realize the only truth of their life to get diminished for the betterment of the humans.

They realize they were not born or had any parents to take care of them but they were men made clones for the betterment of men only. With the presence of such narrative fiction which leads towards ethical issues and becomes relatable to the audience even without a strong knowledge of science fiction and medical jargon surrounding cloning.  Never Let Me Go' is a tale that should be read by all since it simplifies the purpose of life and power of true love. A highly recommended book for those who want to make their leisure time, 'A happy time'.
